The allover Zil-i-Sultan ("shadow of the sultan" design was particularly popular in Persia in the later 19th century. This interpretation features offset rows of navy vases with red roses, on a cream-straw ground, with a dense infill of palmettes and rosettes. Each vase supports two perching birds of distinct species. The ecru main border repeats the vases, roses and birds in the same scale. Very finely woven, with a textile-like handle and very short pile. Cotton foundation. Good condition.
